Always taking care of you.

Get the facts about what’s happening at Atrium Health.

In everything we do, we ask one guiding question: “What’s best for our patients?”

Get the facts on some recent updates, and learn how we’re always caring for you.

Anesthesia

What’s Happening?

Atrium Health is transitioning to a new provider of anesthesia services at some of our facilities. Mednax, the for-profit parent company of our current anesthesiology group, has filed a lawsuit in response.

What You Need to Know:

  • Mednax refused to agree to key patient safety provisions when we tried to reach a new agreement. We always put patients and their safety first, and we ultimately weren’t comfortable partnering with them.
  • Scope Anesthesia, the company replacing Mednax, is bringing highly skilled anesthesiologist to join our surgical team, and patients can expect continued exceptional, high-quality, safe care when they start on July 1. Patients will experience more time, not less, with Scope anesthesiologists.
  • Mednax is doing all it can to protect its profits. Facing significant threats to its for-profit business model, pressure from Wall Street stockholders and a growing number of dissatisfied doctors and hospitals, Mednax has gone on the attack.

Mecklenburg Medical Group (MMG)

What’s Happening?

Some doctors have requested to leave our Atrium Health Mecklenburg Medical Group (MMG) practice. While we have offered them the opportunity to remain a part of our MMG practice and still hope they decide to stay, we have made the decision to grant them their request.

What You Need to Know:

  • Our MMG practice is not leaving Atrium Health, even though some of its doctors have requested to leave our MMG practice. We fully intend to continue caring for you and all of our patients, and if you are a patient of our MMG practice, we have a dedicated team ready to help you find another great provider. You can reach us at 704-863-8299.
  • Atrium Health is here to provide all of our patients with world-class care. There will be several providers available who can continue caring for our patients, and we’ll help match our patients with the right provider. With more than 3,000 healthcare providers, we’re focused on giving patients the best care possible with a full care team, plus access to our world-class specialists at Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, Levine Cancer Institute and more.
  • We respect an individual’s right to choose their doctor. For those who choose not to continue their care with Atrium Health, we'll help make it a seamless and coordinated transition.
  • We’d been working with these doctors to find a solution that worked for everyone, so we were disappointed to learn they had filed a lawsuit. More importantly, we wanted to make sure that whatever we decided was in the best interest of patients.
  • The law firm representing Mednax also represents the group of doctors from our Mecklenburg Medical Group practice who filed suit against Atrium Health. These same attorneys are making untrue allegations in the most recent lawsuit. While these statements might get media attention, they lack legal basis.

Pediatrics

What’s Happening?

Recently, some of our pediatricians have left Atrium Health after we made some necessary changes to our compensation model.

What You Need to Know:

  • It was important for us to create pay equity for our doctors. The new plans ensure equity and that there aren’t drastic pay differences between those who do the same job.
  • Only a small number of pediatricians left Atrium Health. Only a few practices were affected in the South Charlotte area, and we’ve already hired new pediatricians to fill those positions.
  • The world-class care you’ve come to expect from Atrium Health is here to stay. We fully intend to continue caring for all of our patients and are adding even more doctors in many practices. This means you’ll have access to the same level of world-class care you’ve come to expect from Atrium Health – now and always.
