Though a young college, the history and traditions of Carolinas College of Health Sciences, is rich. St. Peter's Hospital closed in the late 1930s, making way for Charlotte Memorial Hospital (CMH). A new era in healthcare education had begun. The first CMH nursing class began its three-year journey in 1941, with many enrolled in the Cadet Nursing Program, designed to provide nurses for those injured in World War II.
In the 40s and 50s, CMH also offered educational programs in X-ray technology, medical technology and surgical technology. In the mid-90s, all of those programs merged to form today's Carolinas College of Health Sciences. Today, thousands of graduates of those programs form the Alumni Association of our college. Members give of their time, energy and resources as they are able, and particularly enjoy hosting semi-annual receptions for graduating students. Carolinas College of Health Sciences alumni enjoy returning to campus to see how education has changed!
Alumni giving is vital to the college and demonstrates the powerful connection alumni feel to the needs of current students and to the mission and goals of the college. Giving can take many forms.
Alumni volunteers give of their time, energy, experience and organizational talents. They serve as class representatives, officers of the alumni association or involved members. Alumni host receptions for prospective graduates and organize alumni events and community service opportunities. They serve as tutors, mentors and class speakers. Their involvement enriches the college and our students' lives.
Alumni and friends of the college generously contribute our annual campaign, the cornerstone of which is the spring phone-a-thon. Gifts may be earmarked for capital needs, scholarships, or individually specified needs; or they may be unrestricted, allowing the college to use the gift for the most pressing needs.
