At Atrium Health, we believe the best way for us to provide continuous, exceptional care is to make sure our patients are inspired and informed. Atrium Health Union offers childbirth and child care classes to help you prepare for your baby’s arrival.

Our free, four-week series of classes will give you a better understanding of childbirth and how to care for your newest family member. Four-week class sessions are held on Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at Atrium Health Union Women and Children's Center. Topics include:

Childbirth Preparation Classes

This is a monthly series of four consecutive classes that provide information to expectant mothers and their support partners about the last months of pregnancy, labor and delivery, early postpartum and routine newborn procedures.

Topics include:

  • The birth process
  • Labor coping skills
  • Medical interventions
  • Newborn care, behavior and procedures
  • Breastfeeding in the early days

This class addresses home safety and reviews infant CPR and choking. Topics include:

  • Hands-on training for infant CPR and choking per American Heart Association guidelines
  • Common safety concerns
  • Car seat safety

Introduction to Infant Feeding

This class will help you decide how to feed your baby.  Take this class during your 1st or 2nd trimester.

  • Feeding choices
  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • How your body prepares for breastfeeding during your pregnancy


Super Sibling!

Sibling Class and Tour

This class teaches positive sibling skills and is great for children who are going to be new Big Brothers or Big Sisters. Children will learn essential information to prepare them for the new baby’s arrival.

Topics Include:

  • Newborn appearance and behavior
  • How to hold a newborn safely
  • How to help with the new baby
  • How to understand and cope with feelings about the new baby

One parent or guardian must be present with the child during class.

Babysitting Workshop

This workshop is intended for children ages 12-15 who want to learn about becoming responsible baby sitters. There will be a short break halfway through the workshop. Students are welcome to bring a drink and/or snack to have during this time. There are vending machines available. Topics include:

  • The business of babysitting
  • How to care for infants (including bathing, feeding and changing diapers)
  • Child development
  • Basic first aid
  • Hands-only CPR
  • Choking relief

At the end of the workshop, a review test will be given to all students. After attending the full workshop and obtaining a minimum test score of 80 percent, the student will receive a mailed certificate of completion.

Registration is required for all classes.
