    At Carolinas HealthCare System, we believe the best way for us to provide continuous, exceptional care is to make sure our patients are inspired and informed. Carolinas HealthCare System Union offers childbirth and child care classes to help you prepare for your baby’s arrival.

    Our free, four-week series of classes will give you a better understanding of childbirth and how to care for your newest family member. Four-week class sessions are held on Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at Carolinas HealthCare System Union Women and Children's Center. Topics include:

    Childbirth preparation classes

    WEEKS 1-2

    Whether you are expecting your first baby or need a refresher, this course prepares couples for the challenges of labor and birth. Topics include how to know you are in labor, labor coping techniques, preterm labor, comfort measures, pain management, Caesarean section and postpartum care.

    WEEK 3

    Learn about baby care basics such as diapering, cord care, bathing and burping, newborn safety, and signs of illness and infection.

    WEEK 4

    This special prenatal class is offered for women planning to breastfeed and for those who are undecided. You will learn the advantages, difficulties and basic techniques of breastfeeding your baby.


    Additional Classes offered:


    Infant Safety and CPR

    This class will teach you how to keep your new baby safe and healthy, including:

    • Common safety concerns
    • Car seat safety
    • Infant CPR and choking (not a certification class)
    • Safe sleep


    Introduction to Infant Feeding

    This class will help you decide how to feed your baby.  Take this class during your 1st or 2nd trimester.

    • Feeding choices
    • Benefits of breastfeeding
    • How your body prepares for breastfeeding during your pregnancy


    Sibling class and tour

    This class teaches positive sibling skills and is great for children that are going to be new Big Brothers or Big Sisters. Children will learn essential information to prepare them for the new baby’s arrival. Topics Include:

    • Newborn appearance and behavior
    • How to hold a newborn safely
    • Helping with the new baby
    • Understanding feelings about the new baby and how to cope
