Atrium Health University City offers a full scope of maternity education classes to prepare parents and family for the arrival of their newest family members. Taught in the maternity center on the hospital's third floor, classes are designed to help parents become familiar with what to expect during the childbirth process, as well as with what options are available for childbirth. A variety of classes are offered, tailored to the new parent and partner, children and grandparents.
All of our childbirth instructors are registered nurses and certified childbirth educators.

Childbirth Education Series
A childbirth series is a great way to prepare for labor and delivery. The four sessions will cover signs of labor, normal progress of labor and birth, techniques for coping with labor, including comfort measures, and epidurals. Your partner will learn ways to support you throughout labor. A discussion on cesarean births and postpartum care are also included. There will be a virtual tour of the facility during one of the classes. The last night of class is dedicated to Taking Care of Baby and Infant CPR. At this time classes are virtual.

Condensed Childbirth Education Series
This Friday and Saturday condensed class is for those that are unable to attend weekday classes. This class covers signs of labor, normal progress of labor and birth, techniques for coping with labor, including comfort measures and epidurals. Your partner will learn ways to support you throughout labor. A tour of the maternity center is also included during class. This class allows you to pick a separate date for Taking Care of Baby/Infant CPR. At this time classes are virtual.
Taking Care of Baby/Infant CPR Class
This class is included when you take any of our childbirth education classes. However, it is also available for those that do not need a childbirth class. You will learn baby basics, including everyday tasks such as diapering, holding the baby, feeding and burping, sleep behaviors, soothing the baby and signs and symptoms of illness during the infant period. The infant CPR portion is based on the American Heart Association’s Friends and Family class that teaches lay people emergency care for infant choking and newborn CPR techniques. This class is taught by registered nurses who are also certified American Heart Association instructors. At this time classes are virtual.
Breastfeeding Basics
Join our lactation consultants, and learn how breastfeeding works, how to establish a good milk supply, how to help your baby latch on for feeding, positioning for breastfeeding and knowing if your baby is getting enough milk. You will learn when and where to get help should you need it, both here at the hospital and when you go home. Learning the basics of breastfeeding and starting off with a positive attitude will give you a better experience breastfeeding your baby. At this time classes are virtual.
Back to Work Breastfeeding Class
This class is designed for the breastfeeding mom to take before she goes back to work. Join our lactation consultants to learn more about the use of a breast pump, setting up a workable milk expression schedule, storing milk, maintaining a good milk supply and how to talk to your work colleagues and supervisors about your needs when returning to work. Boot Camp for New Dads
This popular program is presented by new dads and their babies for dads-to-be. They discuss and demonstrate real life experiences of what to expect when you take the baby home, newborn basics and dad’s new role. The program builds confidence to face the challenges of fatherhood. For men only. Cost is $15.
Maternity Adult Tour
This tour is designed for adults to answer all of your questions and give you the peace of mind you deserve for your special birth. The 45 minute tour walks you through our labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum single care private rooms and also answers your questions, from the admitting process and visiting hours, to family and infant security. You will receive a complete overview of our state-of-the-art facility which features all the comforts of home, with the most advanced technology, exceptional support services and experienced nursing staff. I’m Going to Be a Big Brother/Big Sister Tour
This tour is designed to help the soon-to-be big brother and/or sister get ready for your new baby. The sibling tour participants discuss what babies do, how the older sibling can help their parents and how important they are to the family. Siblings also learn and practice holding a baby using a doll and proper hand washing techniques in a relaxed, fun environment. Siblings walk through the maternity floor and room where mom will have the baby and are presented with a special certificate. This tour is for children 3 to 8 years old. Parents must be present.
