Biography

“I hope to improve every patient's health outcome and quality of life with treatments and supportive care options that I have access to. I want to learn from every patient's journey to develop new ideas, research trials and therapies for future patients.”

Dr. Gass is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology (cancer and blood disorders). He specializes in pediatric brain tumors, tumors of the central nervous system and benign hematology.

He is the director of 4th year for pediatric education at the UNC School of Medicine-Charlotte Campus. He is also the education liaison for Levine Children’s Cancer & Blood Disorders, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center, and mentors residents interested in pursuing future fellowship training.

Dr. Gass is the site director for the Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma Registry and the Biallelic Mismatch Repair Deficiency Registry. Additionally, he is a primary investigator for multiple clinical trials for treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors. He has been awarded an annual grant to the Neuro-Oncology department from the Pounding for Parker Foundation.

Dr. Gass is intrigued by the complexity of the brain and how diseases and disorders affect brain function. He hopes to be part of national and international teams, which can bring novel therapies to patients with brain tumors and hopefully improve their outcomes.

He earned his medical degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo and completed his residency at New York University. He then completed two fellowships, one at Columbia University/New York-Presbyterian Hospital and one at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, watching movies, traveling anywhere in the U.S. or world, going to parks, visiting fruit orchards and riding bikes. He golfs when he can and attends sporting events locally. His favorite local team is the Charlotte Knights.
