“I became a midwife to empower women to prioritize their health and reach their health goals. I want to advocate for my pregnant patients to have the kind of delivery they want, whether an unmedicated labor or an epidural. My feelings are best stated by Barbara Katz Rothman: ‘Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.’ I believe strong women make strong communities, and I have a commitment to helping achieve that.”
Burrell is a certified nurse midwife who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN).
Her interest in women’s health began when she visited her pregnant aunt in her tribe’s rural village in Alaska. She witnessed the challenges of women in rural areas needing to fly to larger cities to gain access to health care.
Years later, Burrell enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Italy when she became pregnant with her first son. She had to have an emergency cesarean delivery at an Italian hospital. She witnessed many unique health care challenges that military women face, including a language barrier in some cases. Those experiences inspired her passion for patient education and advocacy.
Burrell received her master’s degree in nursing with a concentration in nurse midwifery at East Carolina University.
When she’s not working, Burrell enjoys spending time with her friends and family, including her 2 sons. One of her favorite things about being a mom is getting to plan parties and take her kids, and often their friends, out for fun experiences.
She and her sons like being outdoors, especially swimming, boating and hiking. Her hobbies include working out, making candles and bath bombs, baking treats and having the occasional girls’ day with friends.
