“I chose gerontology because growing up I always had my grandmother living in my home. My first job was in a long-term care facility. I found these patients need understanding and an advocate to participate in their healthcare. They have a lot to say if someone will just listen to them.”
Redmond is a board-certified gerontology nurse practitioner. She specializes in treating gastrointestinal (GI) and gerontological diseases. She is a member of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International.
Redmond wanted to be a nurse from the time she was 11 years old, and she was later drawn to GI when her husband died from liver cancer. She feels the health of a patient’s GI tract has a significant impact on a patient’s overall health.
She received her nurse practitioner training at Duke University with a post-graduate certificate in gerontology.
Redmond was involved in research studying the benefits of providing a roving diabetic team in office settings for diabetics with hgba1c 8 or higher. Additionally, she was involved in data collection showing that hospital admission and readmission of long-term care and assisted living residents can be prevented by having the facility covered on a daily basis by a gerontologist.
Outside of work, Redmond enjoys spending time with her husband, their 4 children and 2 grandchildren, 2 Boston terriers, a boxer and a rescue dog. She likes musicals, opera, reading biographies, history books and the Bible. She also enjoys time spent at the beach, camping and going to antique shops.
