From the desk of President Cam Cruickshank, Ph.D.

June 3, 2020

Dear Cabarrus College Community,

Like many communities across the country, we were all horrified by the video that captured the death of George Floyd last week in Minneapolis. While these actions may seem distant and removed from our daily lives, we are all impacted by these events. I am certain that each of us has friends and family who have been impacted and will continue to be challenged by racial injustice in ways many of us will never understand.

This is not an isolated incident. Along with the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, it is a continuum of cases and situations that have been occurring since the founding of our country. These examples of continued injustice and inequality show that much work is left to be done to live up to our nation’s ideals.

As an institution and a community, Cabarrus College is committed to justice and equality. We value all people and embrace the opportunity to promote peace and unity through education and service, and by doing all we can to ensure that every member of our community feels safe and welcome on our campus.

These cases of racial injustice often result in disbelief, anger, and unrest. Most of us find it difficult to understand and comprehend. For those students, staff, and faculty members who would like the opportunity to further discuss this situation, we encourage you to seek out available resources such as the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which is open to all, is free, and confidential by contacting 704-355-5021 or visiting the EAP website.  Students may also wish to contact Mrs. Sherry Hamilton, Coordinator of Student Retention and Success at

In the 2020-2021 academic year we plan to do more to celebrate our diversity, ensure equitable treatment for all, and safeguard the inclusion of all community members. We have made plans to broaden the scope of our standing committee, which will be known as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. We are also committed to administering a Campus Climate Survey; and to developing a new statement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion which will articulate our values and the behavioral expectations of all members of our college community.

During these challenging times please join me in continuing to be resolute with your commitment to justice and equality in your life. Through our words and behavior, we can all make a small difference in the lives of members of our beloved community.
