A Breast Cancer Survival Story: The Journey of Cynthia Shaw

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCYdCQXztMs] Cynthia Shaw’s journey fighting breast cancer began with taking care of her husband Robert battling pancreatic cancer and a dream her daughter had. Cynthia recalls her daughter Chemise telling her she had a dream her mom had breast cancer and she should see a doctor. After getting a mammogram she was called back because there was something on her left breast. She thought it was a cyst, not breast cancer. After another mammogram and ultrasound, a biopsy was done. The test results confirmed it was cancer. With this news weighing heavily on her Cynthia had to find the strength to continue Robert’s care and Chemise’s preparations for college. Cynthia came to Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute for treatment. After all, they were taking care of Robert so she knew she’d be in good hands. She was assigned a physician and a breast health nurse navigator, Grace Sauzier. Grace’s role was to provide the emotional support and guidance Cynthia needed to navigate her way through this journey. And all the while, Cynthia was being strong for her husband and daughter --- despite the many, many times she cried and questioned why this was happening to her. When Cynthia started chemotherapy Robert, her husband of 18 years passed away. It was a very hard time for her and Chemise emotionally and physically.   She continued her chemotherapy and radiation treatments and additional surgery. Thankfully, she triumphed. Cynthia has now been cancer-free for two years. And Chemise is now a sophomore at East Carolina University, majoring in nutrition. Cynthia is a survivor! Through the many challenges and bumps in the road, she and Chemise made it with the help of prayer and faith. And she believes firmly that Robert is watching over them.
