Atrium Health Pharmacist Counsels Women Overwhelmed by Fertility Medications

When it comes to in vitro fertilization, there are a lot of needles. Pharmacist Audrey Reis knows firsthand how daunting the process can be. She was a patient too.

Audrey Reis’ fertility journey lasted nearly 12 years with Atrium Health CMC Women’s Institute. Over those years, it was an emotional rollercoaster, but she eventually had four children, who now range from ages 11 to 20 years old, all the result of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Because of what she calls the “wonderful angels” at the Women’s Institute, Audrey decided to join the caring community at Atrium Health as a teammate and has been a pharmacist at Atrium Health Pharmacy MCP since 2005. Audrey uses her experience and offers advice and care to those eager to have the family they have been waiting for.

I counsel IVF patients with one-on-one extensive injection training and review the entire IVF medication process that takes 40 minutes to an hour,” Audrey says. “I often share my personal experience to empathize with patients regarding this sometimes-overwhelming endeavor and how I can relate to their specific situation. As a patient, I needed several egg retrievals and transfers and experienced many unsuccessful attempts, including three miscarriages along with my successful outcomes.

Meet Nichelle Sublett, an Atrium Health patient who met Audrey when she picked up her injections and how Audrey’s compassionate care alleviated her fears.
