Questions About Bronchitis

What is bronchitis?

Bronchitis is when the airways in your lungs swell and make a lot of mucus causing you to cough. Acute bronchitis, also called a “chest cold”, is usually caused by a virus and can occur after an upper respiratory infection.

When should I seek medical care for acute bronchitis?

If you or someone you’re caring for has any acute bronchitis symptoms for longer than three weeks, it’s time to see a medical professional. You should also seek medical care if you’re having more severe symptoms, including:

  • A temperature higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Shortness of breath or any kind of trouble breathing
  • Coughing up bloody mucus

What’s the best way to treat bronchitis?

Acute bronchitis almost always gets better on its own—without antibiotics. Bronchitis is usually caused by a virus but even when caused by a bacteria, antibiotics are NOT recommended. Using antibiotics when they aren’t needed can do more harm than good. The best way to treat bronchitis is to get a lot of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Using cool-mist humidifiers and vaporizers with clean water can help, but sometimes more is required.
