Volunteers are an essential part of our patient’s experience and are valued members of the team at Atrium Health Union, Union West and Waxhaw. Every act of service, no matter how small, plays a vital role in the healing journey of our patients. Through their selfless dedication, volunteers help bring our mission to life—providing health, hope and healing for all.

Most volunteer positions are available during the weekdays, with limited evening and weekend shifts. There are a variety of opportunities to help.

Adult Volunteer Information

Acceptance of volunteers is contingent upon meeting the below requirements and the needs of the hospital. Completing an application does not guarantee acceptance into the volunteer program. The application process may take 4 - 6 weeks.

Most volunteer positions are available during the weekdays, with limited evening and weekend shifts. There are a variety of opportunities to help.

Volunteer schedules vary by department needs. Shifts are generally 4 hours, once a week.

Pre-placement requirements:

  • Completion of volunteer application
  • Interview
  • Orientation/Education
  • Background screening
  • References
  • Health screening includes: QuantiFERON lab test to determine TB exposure (provided)
    • Vaccines required: MMR, chickenpox, current year flu shot (Titer and vaccines provided if no documentation)

Teen Volunteer Information

We offer summer volunteer opportunities to high school students aged 15-18. Teen volunteers provide non-clinical support throughout the hospital, such as supporting the units by stocking, assisting with wayfinding, or escorting patients or visitors.

The department of Volunteer Services looks for mature, self-driven, dependable teens who are seeking to serve the patients, families and staff members of Atrium Health Union and Union West. The ideal candidate is a volunteer who is interested in learning more about the healthcare field.

Please be aware that there are limited positions available. Not all applicants are offered positions.


Steps to becoming a teen volunteer:

  • Applications are accepted Feb 1st - Mar 1st. No late applications will be accepted. Applications must be completed in entirety, or they will not be considered. We also require a background check of all applicants.
  • Selected applicants will be notified and scheduled for interviews Mar 1st - Apr 1st.
  • If selected, you will attend a two-hour orientation before volunteering in the hospital.
  • Volunteers will need health clearance from Teammate Health and will be required to present a copy of their vaccinations, a health history form, and submit to a TB test for clearance.
