Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic liver disease that can progress to cirrhosis and liver failure if left untreated. If a patient is diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, the experienced team at Atrium Health Gastroenterology and Hepatology work with patients to develop a treatment program tailored to fit their needs.

When you need autoimmune hepatitis care, our Digestive Health Program:

  • Has liver specialists who help patients manage their disease and use immunosuppressive medications.
  • Identifies treatments for patients who have not responded to initial therapy.
  • If necessary, performs liver biopsies and uses dedicated liver pathologists to establish a diagnosis.

Diagnosis

Patients may have no symptoms, but the most common symptom is fatigue. While there is no single test that can establish a diagnosis, we work to rule out other causes of liver disease through blood tests and, if necessary, a liver biopsy.

Treatment

Medications that suppress the immune system, such as steroids or azathioprine, often help with autoimmune hepatitis. The goal of treatment is to normalize or improve liver tests so that you don’t develop liver failure, cirrhosis or liver cancer.
