Dr. May is board certified in general surgery with a certificate of added qualifications (CAQ) in surgical critical care. He specializes in the management of critically ill or injured surgical patients with infectious diseases, including acute soft tissue infections, severe peritonitis and acute pancreatitis.
He is a professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. He is the past president of the Surgical Infection Society and the past chair of the surgery section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. May received the Barry A. Shapiro Memorial Award for Excellence in Critical Care from the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM).
Dr. May received a master of business administration (MBA) at Auburn University and his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina.
He is married and has 3 daughters. Outside of work, he enjoys tennis, going to the gym and reading, especially books on history and leadership.
