Biography

“The practice of neonatology is a privilege and an honor. The relationship we develop with the families of our patients is among the most intimate of any specialty. We serve as a baby's doctor as well as a counselor and confidant of the parents every day.” 

Dr. Herman is board certified in general pediatrics, neonatal and perinatal medicine. He specializes in premature infants and babies with congenital birth defects.  He has a particular interest in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and acquired bowel disease in newborns. 

He is the vice president and chief medical officer at Atrium Health Levine Children's Jeff Gordon Children's Center and an associate professor in the Atrium Health Department of Pediatrics for the Division of Neonatology. Dr. Herman serves on the Children's Hospital Association Chief Medical Officer Steering Committee and is a member of the board of directors for OneBlood and the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte. He has been named a Top Doctor by Charlotte Magazine. 

Dr. Herman received his bachelor’s degree at Indiana University and his medical degree at Saint Louis University. He completed a residency and fellowship at the University of Virginia. 

Dr. Herman leads quality improvement endeavors for Levine Children's Hospital and other pediatric inpatient settings throughout Atrium Health. He also leads patient safety work for Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, Atrium Health Mercy, Levine Children's Hospital and Atrium Health's Ambulatory Services. Dr. Herman hosted the Levine Children's Hospital Quality Improvement Coaching Conference, a national meeting to educate young quality improvement investigators in QI science. 

In his free time, Dr. Herman loves to spend time with his wife and 3 boys. He enjoys watching them play lacrosse, running and hiking. Surfing is a family passion, and Dr. Herman and his sons have built their own surfboards.
