Biography

Ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to become a doctor who helped children with cancer. When one of my cousins was diagnosed with cancer as an infant, the physicians who cared for him saved his life. Watching that experience shaped my path and continues to inspire the work I do every day. During my training, I had the honor of learning from some of the same physicians who treated my cousin, decades earlier.

I’m board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology (blood disorders and cancer). I am an attending physician with the pediatric stem cell transplant team at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Cancer & Blood Disorders, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center.

I specialize in providing treatments for children with cancer, including stem cell transplants and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies, which is also a clinical interest of mine.

My main area of research focuses on stem cell transplant, immunotherapy and engineered cellular therapy for cancer. I’m involved in ongoing clinical, basic and translational research studies.

I received my medical and doctoral degrees as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Michigan, and I completed residency at Washington University. I followed this with a fellowship at Johns Hopkins Medicine National Institutes of Health. In 2014, I received the Young Investigator Award from the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and was a 2016 American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) Clinical Resource and Training Course scholar.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing traditional Celtic and pre-Baroque music on the violin. I’ve participated in a number of ensembles and played at events from Irish festivals to historical balls. My wife, Elspeth, is a fellow Celtic fiddler and physician. Together, we enjoy hiking in the mountains, walking on beaches and swing dancing late into the night.
