Biography

Dr. Smith is board certified in emergency medicine and critical care medicine. He has clinical interests in mechanical circulatory support and treating shock, respiratory failure, sepsis and trauma.
Dr. Smith is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society and has won multiple awards for medical education teaching excellence from the Wake Forest School of Medicine.
His research focuses on the cardiovascular response to critical illnesses, including oxygen transportation in the microcirculation and bioenergetics during sepsis and other critical illnesses. He also conducts clinical trials focusing on resuscitation, airway management and novel therapeutics for critical illnesses.
Dr. Smith received his PhD and his medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia. He completed residency in emergency medicine at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic. He completed a fellowship in critical care medicine at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Smith is married with a son and a German shepherd. He’s a retired triathlete and marathoner but still runs and bikes with his family to stay in shape. Their family enjoys dining out and is always looking for hidden gem restaurants in Charlotte, NC.
