Biography
“Having your child in an intensive care unit is an emotional rollercoaster. It is a privilege to support, comfort and celebrate with our families as they go through their journeys in our ICU.”
Dr. Wilkes is board certified in pediatric cardiology and critical care medicine. He specializes in treating heart disease and heart failure in children, with a focus on postoperative care and mechanical circulatory support.
Dr. Wilkes is the director of quality for Pediatric Cardiac Care at Atrium Health Levine Children's HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center.
His fascination with human physiology led to his choice of specialties. He is motivated by an appreciation for the connections that form with his patients and their families.
He received his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma. He completed a residency at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, followed by fellowships at Boston Children's Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
He and his wife have 2 children. In their free time, the family likes to hike in the woods, splash in creeks and make each other laugh. Dr. Wilkes also enjoys woodworking, where he makes messes and, occasionally, furniture.
