Please answer in full sentences:
- What’s your name and title at Atrium Health? (Please include your credentials, like RN, etc.)
Suzhanna Dickerson, IBCLC. I graduated from Winthrop University with a BS in Human Nutrtion with a concentraion in dietetics and later completed my lactation education through Novants internship program.
- How long have you been with Atrium Health?
I have been with Atrium since May of 2026, but I previously worked for Atrium for about 4 years in a different role prior to becoming a lactation consultant in 2021.
- Why did you become a lactation consultant?
Because of my own breastfeeding experience. I struggled with breastfeeding my first baby. The support I received made a lasting impact on me and inspired me to become the person who could provide that same guidance, support and encouragement to other families.
- Why are you passionate about your specialty?
I’m passionate about lactation because it is both personal and rewarding. I understand
how overwhelming and emotional feeding challenges can be. I love helping families build confidence, overcome challenges, and reach their feeding goals during such an important time in their lives.
- Do you have any specific clinical interests?
Yes, women's postpartum mental health. For women the postpartum period is often one of the most physically, mentally and hormonally demanding transitions a person can go through all while trying to keep a tiny human alive.
- What do people misunderstand about lactation consultants? What about breastfeeding?
A huge misunderstanding is that we’re only there to encourage exclusive breastfeeding. My number one role is to help familes meet their feeding goals, whether that is exclusive breastfeeding, combo feeding, pumping or formula feeding when needed. It's about providing non-judgmental support and education to families.
- What’s the wildest question you’ve been asked as a lactation consultant? What about the most frequently asked question?
The wildest question is probably, “Can my husband use my breast milk for coffee creamer?” While that is a wild question I can appreciate my patients feel comfortable enough to ask me. The most frequently asked question is probably, “How long should I breastfeed for?” While the AAP recommends breastfeeding for 2 yrs and beyond I am proud of all moms whether they breastfed for one day or 1 yr.
- What’s one piece of advice you give all of your patients?
Give yourself grace! Whether you gave birth or are supporting mom and baby in the postpartum period, grace is deserved by all.
- Do you have a funny childhood memory to share? (Bonus points if it’s connected to your job!)
No.
- What’s something most people don’t know about you? (Get creative – think of a fun fact, something unique, etc.)
I’m from Idaho and yes, I love potatoes in all their forms! I moved to SC 15 yrs ago and quickly grew to love the south. Fast forward 15 yrs and you’d never know I wasn’t born and raised here.
- Do you have a nickname? If so, what’s the story behind it?
Suz. Mainly because I get tired of spelling my name for people.
- What hobby do you enjoy the most outside of work?
While this is not a hobby I love the beach as well as embroidery and needlepoint... really any “grandma” hobby.
