Coming Soon: Atrium Health Ballantyne Emergency Department Designed to Meet Growing Needs of the Community
Atrium Health Pineville and its surrounding facilities continue to expand in size and complexity allowing patients to receive emergency care right in their own neighborhood.
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 21, 2024 – Atrium Health will soon open its newest emergency department, Atrium Health Ballantyne, a facility of Atrium Health Pineville. Conveniently located at the intersection of Johnston Road and Lancaster Highway, this state-of-the-art facility offers 24-hour emergency care close to home for the growing communities of Ballantyne and nearby areas, including South Carolina.
From broken bones and severe cuts to life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks and strokes, every second counts in a medical emergency. The Atrium Health Ballantyne emergency department will provide care by board-certified emergency medicine doctors and offer quick access to the region’s only Level I trauma center at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, as well as a direct connection to hospital care at Atrium Health facilities, such as rehab, cancer care and other services.
“With the growing population in the Ballantyne area, we have seen firsthand the need for increased access to high-quality, life-saving care,” said Alicia Campbell, facility executive and vice president of Atrium Health Pineville. “Atrium Health Pineville has undergone numerous expansions since its inception in 1987 to meet the needs of our growing communities. We are proud to extend that legacy and bring top-tier emergency services to Ballantyne and beyond through our newest emergency department.”
Atrium Health Pineville is fondly nicknamed “Little Mercy South,” which dates back to the founding of Mercy Hospital South, a branch of the then-independent Mercy Hospital located near uptown Charlotte. No longer “little,” what is now Atrium Health Pineville has grown significantly in size and capabilities to accommodate the rapid population growth in southern Mecklenburg County and beyond.
With more than 10,000 square feet of clinical space, the new free-standing emergency department will include 10 patient rooms, six licensed emergency department exam rooms and pharmacy services to streamline care. This facility offers a seamless connection to Atrium Health Pineville and is part of Atrium Health’s comprehensive network of care, ensuring patients receive expert treatment and, if needed, timely transfer to advanced care facilities.
“By opening this new location, we are bringing additional access to care which will have a tremendous impact on the residents in south Charlotte and northern South Carolina,” said Dr. Jeff Mullins, regional medical director of Atrium Health Ballantyne. “Our communities have come to recognize the Atrium Health name, and we can assure them, this new emergency department will deliver the high-quality care our patients expect and deserve.”
Atrium Health first used the model of a free-standing emergency department when opening Atrium Health Steele Creek 15 years ago this month. A standalone emergency department allows Atrium Health to reach more patients, providing emergent care, without the constraints and cost of building an entire hospital. It also allows patients the ease of care close to home, while lifting some of the burden of navigating a larger facility.
Atrium Health Ballantyne emergency department represents the next step in Atrium Health’s commitment to bringing advanced health care services to the communities it serves.
