Atrium Health breaks ground on new freestanding emergency department in Concord
Opening anticipated in Summer 2026 so patients will have access to 24/7 emergency care closer to home
CONCORD, N.C., Nov. 19, 2025 – Atrium Health marked a major milestone with the official groundbreaking of its new freestanding emergency department, located on John Q. Hammons Drive in Concord, North Carolina. Scheduled to open in Summer 2026, the facility will expand access to high-quality, patient-centered emergency care for residents across Cabarrus and North Mecklenburg Counties.
This standalone emergency department is a critical addition to the region’s health care infrastructure, designed to meet growing demand for timely, advanced emergency services close to home. By reducing travel times and offering an alternative to hospital-based emergency rooms, it ensures patients receive expert care quickly and conveniently - when every second counts.
Upon opening, Atrium Health Concord Emergency Department, a facility of Atrium Health Cabarrus, will offer 24/7 access to emergency medical care, featuring six emergency department rooms, including one trauma room. The layout also includes a three-bay triage/rapid medical exam area and one triage/vitals area, which are designed to support timely, high-quality care. The facility will also feature advanced medical technologies, including imaging services such as a CT scanner, fixed X-ray and portable ultrasound, as well as laboratory and on-site pharmacy services, ensuring comprehensive care in a convenient location.
“Operating as an extension of Atrium Health Cabarrus, this new freestanding emergency department will help us deliver faster, advanced care when it matters most,” said Asha Rodriguez, vice president and facility executive of Atrium Health Cabarrus. “And with the innovative modular construction, we’ll open sooner – without compromising quality – so our community can benefit from timely, compassionate treatment close to home.”
The more than 11,000-square-foot facility is currently under construction using prefabricated modular units. This innovative way of developing a new structure offers significant advantages such as faster completion and is more costeffective. This construction approach delivers the same safe, effective setting for housing an emergency department, without compromising standards.
