Lymphoma Types and Diagnosis

Lymphoma is a general term for cancers that start in the lymphatic system, part of your body’s disease-fighting immune system. It’s important to accurately diagnose the type and subtype of your lymphoma to ensure you receive the most effective treatment possible.

Our hematopathologists (experts in identifying blood cancers) use the latest techniques to identify even the rarest forms of lymphoma. And no matter what type you’re diagnosed with, our high patient volumes – more than any other cancer center in the region – mean we have a depth of expertise treating patients just like you.

The two main types of lymphoma are:

• Hodgkin lymphoma (or Hodgkin’s disease), which involves large abnormal tumor cells called Reed-Sternberg cells.
• Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), which has many subtypes that are classified as either B-cell lymphoma or T-cell lymphoma, depending on the cells involved.

From the moment of diagnosis, you’ll be surrounded by dedicated lymphoma specialists who meet regularly to discuss your case and personalize your treatment. Your care team includes hematologists, medical and radiation oncologists, as well as specialized pharmacists, advanced care practitioners, clinical and research nurses, social workers and patient navigators.

Advanced Treatment Options

High-grade, fast-growing lymphomas require a different type of treatment than low-grade, slow-growing cancers. Using the most advanced therapies available, our specialists tailor your treatment to the specific type of lymphoma you have and the rate of its growth.

Your lymphoma treatment plan may include:

• Active surveillance, also known as watchful waiting, where we regularly monitor your condition and avoid treatment – and its side effects – until your disease progresses. Your doctor may recommend this if you have a slow-growing lymphoma without any symptoms.
• Chemotherapy, which shrinks or destroys cancer cells with powerful medications that may be given as a pill or through an IV.
• Immunotherapy (or biological therapy), which works with your body to stop cancer cells from growing, strengthen your immune system and reduce the risk that your cancer will come back.
• Radiation therapy, which uses high-energy X-rays to target and kill cancer cells.
• Targeted therapy, which blocks the specific genes or proteins that cancer cells need to grow.

Transplant and Cellular Therapy

As the region’s only comprehensive transplant and cellular therapy center, we bring you access to advanced treatments not available elsewhere, including:

• Bone marrow transplant, also known as stem cell transplant, which replaces diseased cells with healthy blood stem cells. We offer the latest approaches, including autologous (self), full-match and half-matched transplants. In the past four years, we’ve performed more than 500 transplants at our state-of-the-art facility.
• CAR T-cell therapy, a type of cellular therapy that supercharges your blood cells to fight cancer. We’re one of only a few cancer care centers nationwide offering CAR T-cell therapy to treat non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other cancers.
