Atrium Health Care Everywhere Street Medicine Project is the first street medicine program in Charlotte, NC, and among the first in the country. Through our Department of Emergency Medicine, we send teams directly to encampments to provide compassionate, field-based medical care to people living in these communities. Our program focuses on trauma-informed, patient-centered care, safety, collaboration and ensuring everyone has a fair chance to get the care they need.

Our services

We provide comprehensive, compassionate care directly where it’s needed most:
  • First aid and medications: Immediate treatment for acute injuries and illnesses with access to essential medications.
  • Wound care: Treatment and care for wounds to support healing and prevent infection.
  • Insurance enrollment support: Assistance signing up for Medicaid or Medicare to expand health care access.
  • Connection to local resources: Navigation to food assistance, phones, housing and community services.
  • Preventive care and harm reduction: Education, strategies and tools to reduce risks and promote long-term health.
  • Essential items: Distribution of items such as sunscreen, menstrual products and other everyday necessities.

Our mission

Atrium Health Care Everywhere Street Medicine Project’s mission is to provide compassionate, accessible and holistic health care to individuals experiencing homelessness. Our program meets people where they are – physically, emotionally and socially – by delivering medical care, mental health support, and essential services with dignity and respect.

Through outreach, education and collaboration, the initiative strives to bridge gaps in health care access, reduce health disparities, and empower individuals to achieve well-being and stability. In addition, our program is committed to serving as a training ground for learners, fostering future health care professionals who are skilled in culturally responsive, community-centered care.
