Atrium Health Teammates Celebrate Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

The legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of promoting peace, reaching for understanding and serving one another with kindness and love -- values also held by Atrium Health teammates.


The legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was that of promoting peace, reaching for understanding and fighting against the inequalities – for all – that exist in our nation.

Each year, teammates at Atrium Health help keep Dr. King’s legacy alive through participation in various events and initiatives. Like Dr. King, our teammates believe in celebrating and promoting the worth of all human beings in a spirit of love, empathy and service to each other. Here, we look back on how Atrium Health teammates and other community members united together over the span of several days to commemorate Dr. King's legacy and to fulfill his mission to serve one another with kindness and love.

YMCA Prayer Breakfast

To kick off national Martin Luther King Jr. Day, McCrory YMCA held their annual prayer breakfast to honor Dr. King.

 

MLK National Observance - CMS Arts and Writing Awards

If you were able to attend the MLK National Observance at Central Piedmont Community College's Halton Theater in Midtown, you would have had the ultimate experience of celebrating Mecklenburg County's rich diversity through different sets of unique performances in music, dance and poetry. Following these acts, speakers took the stage to examine Dr. King’s moral theological and philosophical underpinnings.

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade

Not even Saturday's cold winter chill could hold these dedicated supporters back. Over 300 teammates and family members showed up in their best Atrium Health gear to march through the streets of Charlotte's Uptown area in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade. With more than 100 community organizations, marching bands, floats and performers, this parade is nationally recognized as one of the largest MLK parades in the country!

MLK Growing the Dream Luncheon

With speakers including Jim Dunn, PhD, DHA, DAST, FACHE, Atrium Health's executive vice president and chief people and culture officer, this luncheon was dedicated toward recognizing Mecklenburg County's unsung heroes, including grassroots leaders who work behind the scenes for the betterment of our community.

MLK Call to Service

Recognizing Dr. King's passion for service within the community, over 1,000 community members gathered together to participate in various service projects. These hands-on volunteer projects for families were led by United Way of Central Carolinas.

Atrium Health Wreath Laying Ceremony

As the first of many events to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, teammates gathered together in Marshall Park to commemorate Dr. King and his teachings during the Atrium Health Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service, which included the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the foot of Dr. King's memorial statue. Speaking remarks were provided by Les Maginley, VP of Supplier Diversity.
