Sara Horstmann, MD

“Inpatient pediatric medicine is my sweet spot. This job allows me to constantly think, troubleshoot problems, connect with people, teach and be part of an amazing team, all while working with the greatest creatures on the planet – our kids! Nothing gives me greater joy than connecting with a child or family and being able to truly help them.”

Dr. Horstmann is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine. She specializes in newborn care, deliveries and inpatient pediatrics.

She is the specialty medical director of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Atrium Health's Levine Children’s Hospital and the co-director of the Community Advocacy Resident Education (CARE) in the Department of Pediatrics. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

She thoroughly enjoys taking care of patients and families during times of illness. It allows her to step in during a time of crisis and provide comfort and support while helping make the child better. Working in the inpatient setting also allows her to teach the next generation of providers, which she finds exceptionally rewarding.

Dr. Horstmann is the recipient of the Atrium Health Teal Acorn Award for Community Advocacy, the Atrium Health Physician of the Quarter Award, the Teacher of the Year Award for Medicine and Pediatric Residency at Albany Medical Center and the Teacher of the Year Award for Pediatric Residency at Golisano Children’s Hospital.

She received her medical degree at the University of Vermont and completed a residency at the University of Rochester.

She is married to James Horstmann, who is also a pediatrician at Atrium Health. They have 3 children and 2 golden retriever dogs. She enjoys hiking, hanging out with her family and reading historical fiction.
