If your child is struggling with severe mental health issues that require a higher level of support than traditional outpatient therapy can provide, our program may be just what they need.

At Atrium Health, our Child & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program offers intensive psychiatric services 5 days a week, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This means your child will receive mental health care during the day, while still being able to return home and spend evenings and weekends with family.

For more than 20 years, our multidisciplinary team – of psychiatrists, licensed counselors and nurses – has been dedicated to reaching patients where they are on their path to mental wellness. And our program is one of only a few in the Southeast offering partial hospitalization services to elementary-aged children (ages 5 to 18).

Whether your child is dealing with depression, anger or another mental health condition, we’re here to offer personalized care designed to help them enjoy life more fully.

When is partial hospitalization right for your child?

Your child may benefit from partial hospitalization care if they:

  1. Have a mental health condition that requires intensive treatment
  2. Are at risk of self-harm or harming others but don’t need 24/7 hospitalization
  3. Are likely to be hospitalized or readmitted
  4. Haven’t experienced success with traditional outpatient care
  5. Require ongoing stabilization after transitioning from inpatient care

Finding hope: Understanding our Child & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program

Patient care - what to expect

Your child will receive expert care tailored to their specific needs. Our approach includes daily group therapy, supportive counseling, discharge planning, medication management and other vital services.

When you and your child arrive

Upon your arrival, we’ll warmly welcome you and your child. Together, we’ll start with an initial assessment, which helps us create a personalized care plan for your child.

While in the program

Our program is in session Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Each day starts with a morning check-in, where your child will have the chance to touch base and prepare for the day ahead. Following this, they’ll take part in group therapy, educational support, recreational therapy and individual therapy sessions. During the midday break, your child can enjoy a meal and relax.

Patient attendance each day is expected in this voluntary program.

When they are discharged

We’ll work closely with your child to evaluate their readiness to leave the program. As they get ready for this transitional step, we provide personalized discharge planning and ongoing support.
