If your child is struggling with severe mental health issues that require a higher level of support than traditional outpatient therapy can provide, our program may be just what they need.
At Atrium Health, our Child & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program offers intensive psychiatric services 5 days a week, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This means your child will receive mental health care during the day, while still being able to return home and spend evenings and weekends with family.
For more than 20 years, our multidisciplinary team – of psychiatrists, licensed counselors and nurses – has been dedicated to reaching patients where they are on their path to mental wellness. Our program is one of only a few in the Southeast offering partial hospitalization services to elementary-aged children (ages 5 to 18). Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital is also nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a Best Children's Hospital for pediatric behavioral health.
Whether your child is dealing with depression, anger or another mental health condition, we’re here to offer personalized care designed to help them enjoy life more fully.

Our team of child psychologists and psychiatrists specializes in helping kids heal and achieve long-term mental wellness. Each child’s personalized treatment is designed to address their specific symptoms and needs. Here are some of the services we offer:
Individual therapy: Your child will meet with a licensed therapist to discuss their symptoms and work on developing coping skills to meet their unique goals.
Group therapy: Your child will be able to share their problems and experiences with others going through similar challenges, all while working with a licensed therapist.
Medication management: Your child will speak with a psychiatrist or an advanced practice provider to determine the most effective medication for relieving their symptoms. Caregivers and other medical providers will also be involved to ensure medication is taken appropriately and working effectively.
Recreational therapy: In activity groups, they’ll work on team building and problem solving to improve their physical and social abilities.
Family education and support: You, your child and other family members will engage in weekly sessions to foster meaningful connections and help everyone better understand your child’s needs and treatment progress.
Psychoeducational classes: These classes are designed to help your child understand their mental health issues and learn effective coping strategies.
Your child will receive expert care tailored to their specific needs. Our approach includes daily group therapy, supportive counseling, discharge planning, medication management and other vital services.
Upon your arrival, we’ll warmly welcome you and your child. Together, we’ll start with an initial assessment, which helps us create a personalized care plan for your child.
Our program is in session Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Each day starts with a morning check-in, where your child will have the chance to touch base and prepare for the day ahead. Following this, they’ll take part in group therapy, educational support, recreational therapy and individual therapy sessions. During the midday break, your child can enjoy a meal and relax.
Patient attendance each day is expected in this voluntary program.
We’ll work closely with your child to evaluate their readiness to leave the program. As they get ready for this transitional step, we provide personalized discharge planning and ongoing support.
