As caregivers, there are some things that are out of your control and challenging, but making your space baby-friendly should not be one of them. A safe environment is important as the baby continues to grow and explore. Providing a safe space dedicated to the needs of your baby will help them gain independence, learn new skills, and build a trusting relationship between you and your baby. Creating a safe space should not be complicated or difficult.

Some tips for making your space baby-friendly include:

  • Create an open space in a corner of a room, or mat, that allows for free movement.
  • Act as a guide and observer while the bay is playing and exploring.
  • Install childproof locks on all drawers and cabinets, and cover all electrical outlets.
  • Put away small objects in a secure location to avoid choking hazards.
  • Avoid smoking inside or the same space as your child.
  • Clean your spaces often.
  • Do not introduce electronics until 18 to -24 months of age.
  • If you have firearms in your home, keep firearms and ammunition separate and in locked boxes.

In addition to making your home physically safe and comfortable for the baby, ensure the relationship between you and your baby’s caregivers is strong.
