At Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, we offer you expert care for any condition affecting your heart’s valves or chambers. We use the latest treatments including minimally invasive techniques to treat your heart valve disease with advanced, customized and complete care.

Leading Care and Expertise for Heart Valve Disease

We’re a team of nationally recognized physicians who put our experience and expertise to work for you. As leaders at the forefront of treating heart valve disease, we bring you an unmatched level of care.

  • Better Outcomes: As one of the nation’s highest-volume heart valve disease treatment centers, handling the region’s most complex cases, we consistently demonstrate better survival rates than the national average.
  • More Options: We lead and enroll in a number of innovative clinical trials, meaning you get access to leading-edge treatments well before they’re available elsewhere.
  • Expert Team: We offer a world-class team of structural and valve experts, plus access to Sanger’s full team of diverse heart specialists. Meet the team.

Structural and Heart Valve Disease Conditions Treated

We evaluate and treat a variety of structural and heart valve disease conditions, including:

  • Aortic valve regurgitation; mitral valve regurgitation (leaky valves)
  • Aortic stenosis; mitral stenosis (narrowed valves)
  • Mitral valve prolapse (improper closure of the mitral valve)
  • Complication or failure of surgical valves (bioprosthetic aortic valve insufficiency or stenosis; prosthetic paravalvular leaks)
  • Congenital heart conditions including atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO)

Advanced Treatment Options for Structural and Heart Valve Disease

From surgical to minimally invasive to catheter-based procedures, we treat every type of structural and heart valve disease using a full range of advanced options. We offer:

  • Balloon mitral valvuloplasty to widen the narrowed heart valve using a catheter. This advanced technique replaces older procedures and lowers the chances of your valve re-narrowing.
  • Catheter-based repair of prosthetic paravalvular leaks using different techniques and devices tailored to your valve anatomy. As one of only a few centers in the country with expertise in this procedure, we’re your region’s treatment destination.
  • Closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO). We use catheter-based approaches whenever possible, resulting in fewer risks and faster recovery for you. And when there are additional complexities to your condition like right heart failure or a higher stroke risk, we work hand in hand with other dedicated specialists to give you the comprehensive expertise you need.
  • Complex valve surgery to repair or replace the aortic, mitral, tricuspid or pulmonary valve. We offer minimally invasive surgery, giving you a quicker recovery and a shorter hospital stay. And Sanger is a high-performing hospital for aortic valve surgery, according to U.S. News & World Report – the highest rating awarded for this procedure.
  • Left atrial appendage closure to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat) and to reduce the long-term risk of bleeding associated with blood thinners. Our team began implanting this closure device well before it became more widely available, giving us more extensive experience and a longer track record of success.
  • Transcatheter (catheter-based) mitral valve repair, which uses a clip-like device to repair the mitral valve, ensuring blood continues to move through the heart. We were one of the first in the world to use this technique, and we continue to be a top-volume center for the treatment, giving us deep experience and expertise.
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), also called transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), a minimally invasive alternative to open heart surgery to replace the aortic valve. We’re recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a high-performing hospital for TAVR, placing us in the top 10% of hospitals in the country for this procedure.

Meet Virginia, a TAVR Patient

Virginia blamed her slowing down on old age, but doctors discovered the real culprit was aortic stenosis. With a new valve replacement technique called TAVR, she was back to her water aerobics – and her afternoon tea – in no time.
