The Atrium Health Laboratory provides testing for every area of medicine, from neurology and oncology to infectious disease, primary care and obstetrics/gynecology. From large, multi-specialty medical groups to solo practitioners, home health agencies and long-term care organizations, Atrium Health Laboratory provides testing that meets the strict standards of a hospital-based laboratory.

The board-certified pathologists and specialists at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Pathology Group serve as the network's on-site medical directors. These highly trained staff members offer collaboration, consultation and prompt resolution of testing issues.

Accredited by the College of American Pathologists, Atrium Health laboratory is one of the region’s most extensive lab testing organizations.

  1. The CPT codes provided are based on AMA guidance and are for informational purposes only. CPT coding is the sole responsibility of the billing party.
  2. When an ABN is required: “This tests is subject to a MEDICARE COVERAGE POLICY and may require a signed ABN when ordering.”
  3. When ordering laboratory tests that are billed to Medicare/Medicaid or other federally-funded programs, the following requirements may apply:
    1. Only tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient should be ordered. Medicare does not pay for screening tests, except for certain specifically approved procedures, and may not pay for non-FDA-approved tests or those tests considered experimental.
    2. If there is reason to believe that Medicare will not pay for a test, the patient should be informed. The patient should sign an Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) to indicate that he or she is responsible for the cost of the test if Medicare denies payment.
    3. The ordering physician must provide an ICD-10 diagnosis code, if required by the Medicare Administrative Contractor.
    4. Organ- or disease-oriented panels should be billed to Medicare only when every component of the panel is medically necessary.
    5. Customized panels should be billed to Medicare only when every component of the customized panel is medically necessary.
    6. Medicare National Limitation Amounts for CPT codes are available through CMS or its contractors. Medicaid reimbursement will be equal to or less than the amount of Medicare reimbursement.

Atrium Health Laboratory provides outreach services to physician practices in North and South Carolina assuring quality while being cost efficient. Experienced lab professionals process specimens as rapidly as possible and deliver precise results. Many results are available by phone or fax the same day specimens are received. Courier service for specimen pickup may be scheduled.

Supplies associated with collection, processing and transport to Atrium Health Laboratory are provided at no additional charge (includes a centrifuge and lock box).

Atrium Health Laboratory staff members maintain proficiency standards, procedures, documentation and formal compliance programs. Training programs are available to help medical practices meet regulatory requirements.

Physicians appreciate the accessibility of the Atrium Health Laboratory staff. A personal representative is always available to answer questions and provide testing updates. Medical technologists are also prepared to respond to technical questions and conduct educational seminars.

Atrium Health Laboratory has several lab locations in and around the Charlotte area to service patients. Appointments are required.
