Pulmonary medicine is used for the treatment of diseases related to the lungs and breathing. Pulmonary and Critical Care Consultants, part of Atrium Health, treats people who have asthma, emphysema, lung disease, vascular disease or tuberculosis.

Pulmonary rehabilitation involves an exercise and education program, as well as support from a team specialists who work to improve your physical condition.

Our doctors provide pulmonary care at Carolinas Medical Center and are trained in critical care, as well as pulmonary rehabilitation and sleep medicine. We also offer pulmonary services outside the hospital through Charlotte Medical Clinic.

Lung Cancer Care

Working closely with specialists at Levine Cancer Institute we offer the following procedures:

  • Bronchoscopy
  • Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) guided biopsy of lung tumors and mediastinal lymph nodes
  • Thoracentesis and pleural procedures
  • Percutaneous CT-guided biopsy of lung tumors and mediastinal lymph nodes
  • Mediastinoscopy and lymph node biopsy
  • Thoracoscopy and biopsy of pleural implants, lung nodules and mediastinal lymph nodes

Outpatient Pulmonary Care

Charlotte Medical Clinic offers an outpatient clinic with specialists in pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine – two medical specialties that are closely related. Because our doctors also work at Carolinas Medical Center, your care will be easier if you must be admitted to the hospital.

We treat pulmonary conditions including:

  • Obstructive lung disease, such as asthma, COPD
  • Interstitial lung disease, such as sarcoidi diopathic disease, pneumoconiosis
  • Lung cancer
  • Pulmonary infections
  • Genetic lung disease, such as cystic fibrosis, alpha-1 antitripsin D deficiency

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

If you or a loved one has a chronic condition that causes breathing problems, pulmonary rehabilitation can help give relief. Such conditions might include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), restrictive pulmonary disease or asthma. Preventive and rehabilitative care can reduce your need for hospitalization, improve your quality of life and even prolong your life.

The pulmonary rehab team works with you to develop a plan that includes:

  • Breathing retraining
  • Behavior modification services for nutrition and stress management
