Biography

Childhood infections are inevitable, but the vast majority can be easily managed with proper prevention and treatment. As a board-certified pediatrician, I find it extremely rewarding to help families understand how to best prevent their children from serious infections and guide them through the treatment and recovery process if needed.

I’ve always been fascinated with the ways microorganisms can cause disease and how the immune system fights off infections. My practice provides opportunities to translate these principles into clinical care, ultimately helping children thrive. I strongly believe that by using the resources currently available, severe adverse outcomes from infectious diseases in children should be exceedingly rare.

My areas of focus include:

  • Pediatric infectious diseases
  • Opportunistic infections
  • Vaccine-preventable diseases
  • Congenital, chronic and acute invasive diseases of childhood

I’m the medical director of the Vaccine Research Program at Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital. In this role, I oversee clinical trials for cutting-edge vaccine candidates and help develop studies to describe the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases, evaluate the effectiveness of existing vaccines, determine optimal ways to promote vaccine uptake and explore factors that contribute to robust vaccine responses.

I received my medical degree and doctorate in medical microbiology and immunology from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. I completed my residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Duke University.

I’m married and have a daughter. My family and I enjoy museums, aquariums, zoos and taking walks with our 2 dogs around the neighborhood and local parks. I also enjoy movies and books, especially fantasy, science fiction, classics and history.
