Before joining Atrium Health in August 2018, Dr. May served as the Ingram Chair in Surgical Sciences and is a Professor of Surgery and Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He has served as the Director of Surgical Critical Care and the Program Director of Vanderbilt’s Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowship since being recruited to the institution in 2001. Dr May also directed the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care’s research program. He currently has over 200 published peer reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, and editorials predominately in the areas of surgical infections, critical illness, and trauma. Throughout his career, Dr. May has been active in numerous academic societies including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Surgical Infection Society. He currently serves as President of the Surgical Infection Society. Additionally, he has worked as an Associate Editor for the Surgical Infections Journal since 2014.
