Dr. Heniford founded the Division of Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Atrium Health in 1998 and currently serves as its chief. Under his leadership, it has become one of the most recognized surgical units in the country, performing thousands of complex surgical
procedures for patients from this region as well as more than 30 other states and countries.
Dr. Heniford has written more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, has edited three books and has lectured on six continents. His research has won 52 regional, national and international awards over the last 14 years and has led to real changes in the surgical care of patients around the world. His recent focus has been on facilitation of patient communication in hernia repair; he developed two mobile apps that have been downloaded by thousands of patients in more than 50 countries, including one app that was recognized in the Wall Street Journal.
Recognized by his peers for his expertise, Dr. Heniford is past president of the American Hernia Society and recently received the Georgetown University Medstar Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Hernia Society Nyhus-Wantz Career Achievement Award and the Asia-Pacific Surgical Honorary Membership.
