Dr. B. Joseph Elmunzer is board certified in gastroenterology and hepatology (digestive and liver disorders and diseases). He specializes in interventional endoscopy, the practice of complex endoscopic procedures throughout the digestive system.
He values the ability to help a large number of patients in a very meaningful way, often when alternatives may be limited.
Dr. Elmunzer serves as professor and chief of the Division of Gastroenterology as well as the specialty medical director for gastroenterology and endoscopy at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. He is co-director of the Atrium Health Center for Digestive Health & Surgery.
He has been funded for many years by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct endoscopy-related research, including 2 grants that funded research projects which have shaped endoscopy practice worldwide.
During his time at the Medical University of South Carolina, he was the Peter Cotton Endowed Chair in Endoscopic Innovation, and he was appointed a distinguished university professor, the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member by the board of trustees.
Dr. Elmunzer received his medical degree at the University of Miami. He completed residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship at the University of Michigan, where he also received a master’s degree in health and health care research.
He is married with 2 children who keep him busy in his time away from work. As a former competitive tennis player for the University of Miami, Dr. Elmunzer prioritizes living an active and fit lifestyle.
