Biography

“As a child neurologist, I work to alleviate suffering by making the right diagnosis, treating with the right medications, and offering support and empathy to patients and their families.”

Dr. Bonthius is board certified in pediatrics and in neurology with special qualification in child neurology. As a child neurologist, he specializes in the evaluation and treatment of neurological birth defects. He is the division chief for the Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital Division of Child Neurology, medical director for Pediatric Neurology, and a professor of pediatrics and neurology.

A national leader in child neurology, he is editor-in-chief of the Child Neurology Society’s publication, Connections, and is associate editor of the Journal of Child Neurology.

Dr. Bonthius received his medical degree and doctorate from the University of Iowa. He completed a residency at the University of Virginia and a residency at the University of Iowa. He completed a fellowship at the University of Otago, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

He has led numerous research studies, including those that focus on fetal alcohol syndrome and viral infections of the developing brain. He has received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

Dr. Bonthius is married and has 3 children. In his spare time, he and his family enjoy an active lifestyle of skiing, biking, scuba diving, and rock climbing.
