Derek Michael Parshall, MD

I chose a career in orthopedic sports medicine because of my own background in sports and my lifelong interest in athletics. I understand how important it is to stay active and how frustrating it can be when an injury gets in the way.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping patients recover and return to the activities they enjoy.

I take an individualized approach to care. My goal is to understand the problem, learn what activities matter most to you and develop a treatment plan that fits your goals.

I am board certified in orthopaedic surgery and hold subspecialty certification in orthopaedic sports medicine.

My practice focuses on sports-related and active-lifestyle injuries of the shoulder and knee, including:

• ACL tears and other knee ligament injuries
• Meniscus injuries
• Rotator cuff injuries
• Shoulder and kneecap instability
• Cartilage injuries

I received my medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and completed my orthopedic surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. I then completed fellowship training in orthopedic sports medicine at TRIA Orthopedic Center/University of Minnesota.

My training and experience have allowed me to care for athletes at many levels, from high school and college competitors to professional athletes, including the Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Twins and St. Paul Saints, as well as collegiate and high school athletic programs.

Today, I serve as a team physician for Winthrop University and support several local high school athletic programs. These experiences have helped shape my approach to helping athletes safely return to sports and activity after injury or surgery.

In addition to patient care, I am an assistant professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. I am involved in teaching and sports medicine research, including work focused on ACL injuries and outcomes after sports medicine surgery.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and son, staying active and working out. I am also an avid sports fan and enjoy following my favorite teams. Much of my community involvement comes through sports medicine, where I work closely with athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and families throughout the region.
