Biography
“I was drawn to sports medicine because I have always been a fan of sports and exercise, so a scientific interest in recovery and prevention is a big part of why I practice medicine. I work hard to bridge the gap for the patient between the primary care physician and an orthopedic surgeon.”
Dr. Maenpaa is board certified in sports medicine. His work involves diagnosing and treating acute and chronic nonoperative musculoskeletal issues, overuse injuries, osteoarthritis and concussions. He has a clinical interest in regenerative medicine, including treatment with platelet-rich plasma injections, stem cell injections and prolotherapy. He is proficient in diagnostic ultrasounds and ultrasound-guided injections.
He has practiced sports medicine for many years, running his own practice for 6 of those. He has taken care of athletes participating in everything from roller hockey to ballet. He also enjoys working with musicians with repetitive use injuries. He served as an athletic team doctor at every level of play, from high school to professional sports, including for the Philadelphia Flyers ice hockey team. Dr. Maenpaa is a member of the Rowan University Sports Medicine Hall of Fame and was the lead team physician at Rowan University for 14 years.
Dr. Maenpaa received his medical degree at The University of Sheffield and completed a residency at Good Samaritan Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
He is married with 2 children and enjoys spending his time hiking on Charlotte’s greenways with his family. Dr. Maenpaa grew up and was educated in the United Kingdom and is a soccer enthusiast. He also enjoys playing and studying golf, as well as cycling and strength training.
