Biography

“I was drawn to hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery because it allows me to care for patients with complex liver, pancreas and bile duct conditions while combining advanced surgical techniques with personalized, evidence-based care. I’m passionate about helping patients navigate challenging diagnoses and providing the best possible outcomes through teamwork and innovation.”

Dr. Hala Muaddi is board certified in general surgery and specializes in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery. Conditions she treats include benign and malignant tumors of the liver, pancreatic cancer and cysts, bile duct diseases and neuroendocrine tumors. She is skilled in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

Her goal is to combine advanced surgical techniques, innovation and teamwork to deliver the safest treatments and the best possible outcomes, while ensuring every patient feels supported and informed throughout their care.

Dr. Muaddi twice received the MD Program Teaching Award of Excellence from the University of Toronto as well as multiple residency advocacy awards for improving surgical training and supporting patient-centered care.

Her research focuses on improving care and surgical outcomes for patients with liver, pancreas and bile duct conditions. While pursuing her doctorate, she used large administrative databases to study the implementation and outcomes of surgical innovations, which led to receiving several competitive grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Clinician Investigator Program and Physician Services Incorporated.

More recently, Dr. Muaddi’s research has focused on applying artificial intelligence by combining administrative data with patient-reported information to develop tools that help identify surgical site infections earlier. This work is supported by a competitive Mayo Clinic grant and reflects her broader goal of using data and innovation to improve recovery and enhance patient care.

At the University of Toronto, Dr. Muaddi received her doctorate (PhD) in clinical epidemiology, her medical degree and also completed residency in general surgery. She completed a fellowship in hepato-pancreato-biliary at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Muaddi enjoys spending time with her husband, exploring new restaurants, staying active outdoors, traveling and experiencing different cultures and cuisines. An avid reader, she enjoys a wide range of genres, including historical fiction, contemporary fiction and biographies. Her older cat has been her constant companion and has relocated with Dr. Muaddi multiple times. She also has a new rescue puppy who recently joined the family.
