Biography

“Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, including in developing countries. The early identification and management of cardiovascular disease presents an unparalleled opportunity to reduce this burden. Pediatrics, particularly preventive pediatric cardiology, allows me to work with patients and their families over the course of many years and build strong relationships with them and those in the community.”

Dr. Jacob Hartz is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. He is the director of preventive cardiology at Atrium Health in the Greater Charlotte region.

He focuses on the diagnosis and management of patients with hypertension and dyslipidemia (cholesterol disorders), secondary dyslipidemia and monogenetic lipid disorders, such as sitosterolemia.

He has held grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and has been the primary investigator in clinical trials for novel lipid lowering therapies. His research focuses on homozygous familial high cholesterol, behavior modification, diet and physical activity and social determinants of health. He has served on national committees for the American Heart Association and authored international guidelines.

Dr. Hartz is particularly interested in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease through behavior modification. He also enjoys working with patients with rare genetic disorders, such as hypobetalipoproteinemia (a disorder that impairs the body’s ability to absorb and transport fats) and sitosterolemia.

Dr. Hartz received his bachelor’s degree at Emory University, his medical degree at the University of New Mexico and his master of public health degree at Columbia University. He completed residency in categorical pediatrics at Duke University, followed by a pediatric cardiology fellowship at Children’s National Hospital and a preventive pediatric cardiology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. Before coming to Charlotte, he served as the director of preventive cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital for 5 years.

Dr. Hartz and his wife have 2 children and a wonderful goldendoodle named Olive. He loves spending time with his family, especially when they are eating meals together. He is a foodie, and he also loves to play tennis.
