Biography
“Ever since I was a little boy, I was inspired to become a doctor who helped children with cancer.”
Dr. Huo is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology (cancer and blood disorders). He specializes in providing treatments for children with cancer, including stem cell transplants and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies. He is an attending physician with the Atrium Health Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant team at Levine Children’s Cancer & Blood Disorders, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center.
Dr. Huo was inspired to pursue pediatrics when one of his cousins was diagnosed with cancer as an infant and physicians saved his cousin’s life. When Dr. Huo fulfilled his goal of becoming a physician-scientist for children with cancer, he had the honor of learning from some of the same physicians who saved his cousin’s life decades earlier.
In 2014, Dr. Huo received the Young Investigator Award from the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and was a 2016 American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) CTRC scholar.
He received his MD and PhD as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Michigan and completed his residency at Washington University in St. Louis. He followed that with a fellowship at Johns Hopkins/National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Huo’s main area of research is in stem cell transplant, immunotherapy and engineered cellular therapy for cancer. He’s involved in ongoing clinical, basic and translational research studies.
In his spare time, he enjoys playing traditional Celtic and pre-Baroque music on his violin. He has participated in a number of ensembles and played at events from Irish festivals to historical balls. Dr. Huo married a fellow Celtic fiddler and physician named Elspeth. Together, they enjoy hiking mountains, walking beaches and swing dancing all night long.
