Joel J. Napeñas, DDS has a practice limited to oral medicine at Carolinas Center for Oral Health. Dr. Napeñas received his DDS degree at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, in London, Ontario, Canada. He completed a general practice residency (GPR) at Dayton, OH, and oral medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center.
Dr. Napeñas joined Carolinas HealthCare System in 2007, and is currently director of the oral medicine residency training program in the Department of Oral Medicine. He previously was assistant professor in the Division of Oral Medicine and Radiology at Western University, and director of GPR programs at CMC and at the University of Texas at Houston.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine, and holds a Fellowship in Dental Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in oral medicine. He has over 25 publications in peer review journals, in addition to numerous book chapters and other publications on the topics of oral medicine, orofacial pain and dental management of patients with complex medical conditions. Among his academic endeavors, he was a section head for the World Workshop on Oral Medicine VI, a group that convened oral medicine experts from around the world in 2014.
