Biography

“I enjoy working with athletes and helping them optimize their bodies to achieve their maximum potential.”

Dr. Joel Pranckun specializes in orthopedic surgery. He focuses on adult and pediatric sports medicine and minimally invasive surgeries for the shoulder, hip and knee. He performs cartilage restorations, shoulder and partial knee arthroplasties (reconstructions), fracture and sprain care, patellofemoral (knee) instability management, arthritis care and management of injuries in the throwing athlete.

Additionally, Dr. Pranckun is trained in complex knee surgery, including arthroscopic and open techniques. He routinely performs ACL and meniscus surgeries.

Dr. Pranckun served as the team doctor for Texas A&M football as well as several professional teams, including the Houston Sabercats rugby team and the San Antonio Missions Triple A baseball team. He also provided sports coverage for Texas Southern University and Reinhardt University.

Dr. Pranckun received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Delaware and his degree in osteopathic medicine at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed residency in orthopedic surgery at UPMC Pinnacle and a fellowship in sports medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

He went on to complete subspecialty fellowship training in sports medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. During his fellowship, he was trained by one of the pioneers and founders of modern shoulder arthroscopy, Dr. Stephen Burkhart, who invented many of the tools and techniques used in shoulder arthroscopy. He is also a published author, with some of his published literature describing techniques in shoulder and knee arthroscopy.

Outside of work, Dr. Pranckun loves traveling and exploring new cultures and cuisines with his wife and 2 children. He is an avid scuba diver and a fan of all the Philadelphia sports teams.
