Biography
“I believe I have been given the skills and opportunities to improve the lives of others, and I cherish helping children with problems that are out of their control. Surgery allows me to have an immediate and substantial impact on the health of my patients. This is an incredible honor, but one that must be balanced with care and collaboration with the families I treat.”
Dr. Jonathan Walker is board certified in urology and specializes in pediatric urology. He focuses on pediatric genitourinary oncology, including Wilms and other kidney tumors, testis tumors and bladder tumors. He treats hydronephrosis, ureteropelvic junction obstructions, vesicoureteral reflux, hypospadias, circumcision complications, undescended testicles and hydroceles. He is skilled in performing minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic surgeries.
He is inspired to help young people solve problems that will affect them for the rest of their lives. Dr. Walker is particularly interested in the oncology side of pediatric urology because it is the ultimate combination of extreme medical complexity, technically challenging operations, ultimate patient vulnerability and unique opportunities for life-altering health impacts.
Dr. Walker serves in the pediatric disease-oriented group and on the oncofertility team at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital. He spearheaded the successful effort to join the nationwide, multi-institutional Pediatric Surgical Oncology Research Collaborative (PSORC) and serves as one of the surgical site leads. Additionally, he has been the surgical lead for the hospital’s Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program, which established pre-, intra- and postoperative protocols for pain management and recovery after major urologic surgery. He is a member of the executive committee of the Pediatric Urologic Oncology Working Group (POUWG).
Dr. Walker received his bachelor’s degree at Samford University and his medical degree at The University of Tennessee. He completed residency in urology at the University of Kentucky and a fellowship in pediatric urology at the University of Colorado.
He is married with 4 children who are fun-loving balls of energy. His family enjoys participating in sports, traveling to new places, snow skiing and hiking. They are big college football fans and cheer for the Ole Miss Rebels football team.
