Biography
“A well-informed patient has the greatest chance for a positive outcome. I see my role as an advocate for all my patients, listening, guiding and educating them through each step of their medical journeys. From their first visits, to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, through to final outcomes well beyond their stay in hospital, my patients become part of an extended family with which I am very privileged to be involved.”
Dr. Killian McCarthy is board certified in internal medicine and specializes in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease.
Conditions he treats include complex coronary artery disease and coronary vasomotor disorders, including coronary microvascular dysfunction and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by coronary artery spasms). He also focuses on intravascular imaging and physiology, high-risk coronary interventions and mechanical circulatory support devices.
A personal medical experience at a very young age provided Dr. McCarthy with a deep understanding of the difficulties patients and their families experience when faced with the complexities of trying to navigate a health system.
His primary clinical and research interest is in intracoronary imaging and physiology, especially the interface between coronary physiology and coronary microvascular disease.
Dr. McCarthy received his medical degree at University College Cork, Ireland, graduating top of his class. He completed residency in internal medicine and fellowships in both cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at Harvard University/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his fiancée and visiting friends and family back in Ireland. He is a soccer, rugby and tennis enthusiast and uses every opportunity to get on the tennis court during his free time.
