Biography

“I integrate a strong nutrition focus in my patient care to help achieve the best possible

outcomes for patients with gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. My personal motivation is to offer my patients excellent care with dignity and respect, whether that be for colorectal cancer screenings and surveillance or through the treatment of chronic GI conditions.”

Dr. Spence is board certified in internal medicine, with a specialty in gastroenterology and hepatology (medicine focusing on diseases of the liver). She has a clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of short-bowel syndrome, intestinal failure, celiac disease, malabsorption and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

She received her degree in osteopathic medicine at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed residency at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center.

Dr. Spence is involved in research on nutrition literacy, which is the study of patients’ capacity to process and understand information relating to healthful eating.

In her free time, Dr. Spence loves spending time with her husband and 2 children, particularly in outdoor activities. Her hobbies include trail running, hiking and playing the guitar. She also loves traveling internationally and previously lived in Argentina.
