Biography

"What I love about being a pediatric endocrinologist is that I get to build a relationship with my patients over decades. Most pediatricians rarely see high school- and college-age kids, but I get to see them regularly and watch them grow up. Regardless of the endocrine concern, my core philosophies for the children I take care of are the same. I want them to be healthy now; I want them to be healthy when they're 90 and I don't want their medical conditions to prevent them from being kids.”

Dr. Vanderwel is board certified in pediatrics with a specialty in pediatric endocrinology. He has clinical interests in growth and puberty, as well as the treatment of diabetes, cystic fibrosis and issues arising from the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands.

Dr. Vanderwel received his medical degree at Michigan State University. He completed a residency at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center and a fellowship at the University of Texas.

He was named Charlotte Magazine Top Doctor several times and has repeatedly been awarded the W. Elliott White, Excellence in Pediatric Teaching Award.

Dr. Vanderwel enjoys spending free time with his wife and 3 kids. He is an avid Michigan State basketball fan and enjoys playing fantasy basketball, running and swimming.
