Mary Ann Knovich, MD, BS

“I am passionate about the multidisciplinary care of persons with blood disorders, especially bleeding and clotting disorders. I want my patients to know they have my full attention and concentration to focus on their medical issues. I’m interested in the whole patient, and I want to encourage them to be their own best advocates.”

Dr. Knovich is board certified in hematology (blood disorders) and internal medicine.

She has clinical interests in bleeding disorders, clotting disorders, hemophilia, von Willebrand disease (a bleeding disorder caused by low levels of clotting protein in the blood) and nonmalignant hematology.

Dr. Knovich is the director of Nonmalignant Hematology, the director of the Hemophilia Treatment Center and a professor of medicine at Atrium Health’s Levine Cancer Institute.

When Dr. Knovich was a young girl, a family member was diagnosed with a blood disease that was 95% fatal at that time. Due to rapid advances in the field of hematology, her family member survived her illness and recently celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary. Her story inspired Dr. Knovich to pursue medicine. She is passionate about teaching other medical providers at all levels to recognize and understand hematology diagnoses.

Dr. Knovich has been named a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly, a Best Doctor in North Carolina by Business North Carolina and a Top Doctor by Charlotte magazine for multiple years.

She received her medical degree at Pennsylvania State University. She completed residency and a fellowship at Wake Forest University.

Outside of work, Dr. Knovich enjoys gardening, especially native plants of the Southeast, bird watching, hiking, spin classes, and spending time with her family and pets.
