Biography

“I enjoy sharing my patients' successes, such as regaining mobility or attending a concert their arthritis previously prevented. I also strive to nurture patients through harder times when success may look different. Doing this work in a team environment with like-minded individuals further drives my passion.”

Dr. Nikkole Haines specializes in orthopedic surgery. She focuses on arthritis of the hip and knee joints. She specializes in primary, conversion and revision hip and knee joint arthroplasty, and she has performed more than 3,000 procedures in practice.

Medicine first sparked her interest when she played soccer as a child. She loved working with a team toward a goal while engaging physically and mentally. During her medical training, she saw the impact of maximizing musculoskeletal function through surgery, and this solidified her choice of career specialty.

Dr. Haines is an associate professor and the service line director for hip and knee joint arthroplasty at Atrium Health Mercy Hip and Knee Center, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center.

Her research focuses on patient outcomes and patient optimization for hip and knee joint arthroplasty, factors impacting orthopedic trainees, outpatient and same-day joint arthroplasty and the impact of technology in joint arthroplasty.

Dr. Haines received a bachelor’s degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering at the Johns Hopkins University and her medical degree at the Pennsylvania State University. She completed residency and a research fellowship in the Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstruction at Rush University.

Outside of work, Dr. Haines enjoys spending time with her husband and son. Her hobbies include gardening, running, horseback trail riding, and snowboarding. A favorite memory is completing the Sellaronda skiing circuit in the Dolomite mountains of Italy.
