Dr. Charilaou is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He specializes in inflammatory bowel disease.
He has clinical interests in complex inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. He is also skilled in treating microscopic colitis, general gastroenterology and hepatology, upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, chromoendoscopy and stricture dilation (a procedure to widen abnormal narrowings).
Dr. Charilaou received his medical degree at Charles University. He completed residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Saint Peter's University Hospital. Additionally, he completed a fellowship in advanced inflammatory bowel disease at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).
Dr. Charilaou has conducted research involving precision medicine in inflammatory bowel disease, postoperative recurrence in Crohn's disease and machine-learning models for clinical outcomes predicting. He earned a postgraduate diploma in machine learning and artificial intelligence at Columbia University.
In his free time, Dr. Charilaou enjoys going to the movies with his family and exploring new restaurants around Charlotte. He also produces music and enjoys hiking and camping.
